Movie description:
In »The Death Of Toys«, a mother resists her 10-year-old son’s efforts to give up toys. The story is a fresh look at a late childhood milestone that we haven’t seen explored on film. The film goes to unexpected places as it asks some painfully honest questions: Are parents selfish in wanting to keep their children young and playful? How much of our own needs do we ask our children to fill? And is it fair to our kids to relive our childhood through them?
When Lily returns home from work, she wants playtime with her ten year-old son Seth. But Seth decides it’s time to give up his toys. Lily won’t let him. She use muscle-bound action figures and little green aliens to convince him to keep the toys, but Seth’s mind is made up. As they struggle over the toy box, it breaks, and Lily sends him to his room. At dinner, she can’t joke him out of his angry mood. Later, she lies awake thinking it over. She asks the Lover next to her in bed if she made a mistake in punishing Seth. The man replies, »You’re the one in charge.« They kiss, and we see a photo of him, together Lily and Seth, but then the man, clearly the father, disappears. He was never there. Later, Seth wakes and wanders in Lily’s room to see her fixing the broken toy box, in her pyjamas and his dad’s old leather jacket. She asks him to read to her, so he climbs into her bed. Although it’s the middle of the night and he’s tired, Seth reads to his mother. The next morning, Lily goes into the kitchen and finds that Seth has messed with the toys in some very mischievous ways. His damaging the toys makes her realize she is damaging him. So she agrees to give up the toys, which leads to growth in some unexpected ways.
