With Micah away, Lucas McCain is acting Marshal in North Fork. When a Mexican farmer is killed and his house burned down, his family is strangely quiet and refuses to cooperate with him. He soon realizes why when a Mexican gunfighter known as Baranca shows up in town with his men determined to mete out justice in his own way. Baranca is not an unreasonable man and proposes to Lucas that they determine whose law will be applied by staging a contest between the two of them.
