Краткое содержание:
Eli’s life is nightmare. His mother is a drug addict who neglects his care, and his transient father floats into and out of their lives. Eli is filled with rage from the physical abuse he has received from his father but he longs for his love and approval. On his Eli’s 10th birthday Eli is taken to the hospital by police who respond to a domestic disturbance call. Eli is removed from his home and is placed in Locustwood, a facility little better than a youth prison. In this environment Eli spirals downward, becoming an angry and scared creature.
In the same town lives Ken. A yuppie investment banker, Ken has fine taste in automobiles, wine and women. When the company he works for is wiped out and his job is lost, Ken is forced to move in with his mom. In spite of providing a loving home, he despises her because of her penny-pinching ways.
Ken is lured by his beautiful and resourceful high school acquaintance Tammie to sign up to be Eli’s counselor at a summer camp for abused and neglected kids. Eli is determined to ruin camp for everyone, especially Ken. Ken hasn’t spent time with a ten-year old since he was ten and, after the first day at camp, realizes he is in over his head and plans to give up. But ex-marine and veteran counselor Samuel challenges Ken to let go of his selfish ways for just one week so an ungrateful Eli can stay at camp.
Over the course of the next couple days, Ken’s heart is broken as he learns of the terrible abuse Eli has suffered. Eli slowly opens up to Ken as Ken starts to love Eli unconditionally. Eli begins to have hope.
An unauthorized visit from Eli’s father to camp threatens to send everything spiraling out of control. Now Ken must decide if he is willing to sacrifice his future so Eli will understand the meaning of unconditional love.
